Google acquires popular email client Sparrow

Google acquires popular email client Sparrow

In an interesting move, Google has acquired Sparrow, a popular email client for OS X and iOS. The acquisition was announced by Sparrow’s CEO Dom Leca on their website. According to The Verge, this acquisition cost Google under $25 million.

Now, if you are wondering whether this move will somehow result in a better version of the app then you are in for disappointment. This is basically a talent acquisition, which means Google will be using the talented team behind the excellent Sparrow app to improve their own email client. Sparrow, meanwhile, will be pretty much abandoned, with no new features to be added in future. You can also forget about that iPad app that was supposedly in the works.

This move has naturally met with criticisms from those who purchased and have been using this app for a while now. Although the apps are already pretty awesome and will continue to be sold through the App Store, the fact that there won’t be any further improvements is quite a bummer.

Hopefully, Google makes it all worthwhile by releasing some slick new Gmail apps in the future.

HTC allegedly working on R7 and R12 Windows RT Blue tablets

HTC is allegedly working on a couple Windows RT Blue powered tablets, which are codenamed R7 and R12. The “R” in the title indicates that the slates will be running on the latest Windows RT Blue edition.

The HTC R7 is rumored to sport a 7″ full HD display and a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM. The slate will also feature a 13 megapixel auto focus rear camera and will come out with a 16 GB of internal memory and supports expansion up to 32 GB via microSD card.

The 7-inch tablet is said to feature an LTE radio and a range of connectivity options, which include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0.

On the other hand, the HTC R12 will debut with a 12-inch 2048 x 1536 pixel screen. The larger tablet is said to have the same chipset as the R7, but even better connectivity.

Unfortunately, there is no word on the pricing and availability details of the tablets, but the new slates are rumored to be launched on October 13.

LG announces Optimus Pad LTE with 8

LG announces Optimus Pad LTE with 8.9-inch display and Honeycomb, launching initially in Korea

LG has announced a new tablet for its homeland called the Optimus Pad LTE. Compared to the regular Optimus Pad, there are quite a few differences, other than the inclusion of LTE.

For starters, the design is new. The Optimus Pad LTE is thinner at just 9.34mm compared to the 12.7mm thickness of the non-LTE version. It’s also lighter at just 497g compared to the 621g of the Optimus Pad. Other changes include a larger 6,800mAh battery, which is up by 400mAh over the standard version despite the reduced thickness and weight, dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor that replaces the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor on the non-LTE model and a simpler 8 megapixel camera instead of the dual 5 megapixel 3D camera on the back.

The Optimus Pad LTE retains the 8.9-inch, 1280×768 resolution IPS display, HDMI out, DLNA and Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It also has 32GB internal memory and is the first tablet in the world to have a full-size SD card slot. This way, you can, for example, simply take out the card from your digital camera and plug it into the tablet to view your images and videos on it.

The tablet will initially be launching only in Korea but you can expect it in other markets later. No price has been mentioned so far.

Android dominates iOS in China

Android dominates iOS in China

A recent report by a Beijing analytics company rated Android device penetration in China to a whopping 68.4% by the end of 2011.

By comparison, iOS was only able to snag mere 5.7% of that same pie.

Such a drastic deviation may come as quite a surprise to some people, especially considering a recent report pointing to one in ten people in Beijing and Shanghai owning iOS devices. This same report also states that China has recently overtaken the US as the country where the most smartphone devices are activated, so one in ten people owning an Apple device is not exactly a drop in the bucket.

And we all remember that iPhone 4S launch fiasco at the beginning of the year, where Apple had to suspend sales of its latest iPhone in Beijing and Shanghai due to unruly crowds on opening day.

So why the huge disparity between the Android and iOS market share? Most sources point to price being the deciding factor, as Android is able to take advantage of lower-cost devices as vessels for the Google’s mobile OS. This is especially true for China, the backyard of price competitive smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and ZTE.

With the anticipated announcement of the latest iPhone somewhere in the near future, we’ll have to wait and see if Apple can make up some of their lost ground in 2012.
