TP-LINK T882 droid heads to China

TP-LINK T882 droid heads to China, runs on vanilla ICS

If you just looked at your wireless router, you are not alone. This isn’t even TP-LINK’s first attempt at a smartphone, but the previous ones never really gained traction.

The T882 runs on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – the vanilla version. This specs are pretty decent, too – it has a 4.0-inch WVGA display, a 1.4GHz processor (no info on number of CPU cores, though), an 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording and dual-LED flash plus 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The phone is only going to be available in China and its pricing is still uknown.

Thanks, Alfred, for the tip!

Want to use Android apps on your BlackBerry PlayBook right now

Want to use Android apps on your BlackBerry PlayBook right now? Try rooting it first.

RIM promised compatibility with the Android apps for the PlayBook with the upcoming OS 2 update but that won’t be coming before February. So what do you do if you want to, say, use Google+ on your PlayBook right now? The answer is, root it.

CrackBerry.com has gone through the trouble of making an extensive guide that will help you root your PlayBook so you can run Android Market on it and thereby, have access to the Android Apps within. The guide is a bit lengthy and as with any rooting procedure there is some risk involved but if you follow all the steps properly, then you will have a fully rooted PlayBook by the end of it.

It must be said that not all apps with be compatible with the PlayBook even after the root although a fair amount of them will work. Coming from the BlackBerry App World, though, that’s still a big upgrade.

Rooted Androids not welcome in Google Movie Rental

Rooted Androids not welcome in Google Movie Rental, sorry

You rooted your Android, huh? Well, you can leave the popcorn here, there’s no Movie Rental for you. The Google Movie Rental service launched at Google I/O and lets you rent a movie (for around $2) and watch it on your droid smartphone (or PC or tablet if you want).

However it will not be working on rooted devices due to copyright violation concerns.

If you try to watch a movie through Google Movie Rental on your rooted Android you’ll get Error 49. The support page states that:

You’ll receive this “Error 49″ message if you attempt to play a movie on a rooted device. Rooted devices are currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection.

I’m guessing this is done to stop apps that can just copy the rented movie and let you keep it forever (and share it with others). It’s not an unreasonable concern but it clashes with Android’s open nature – many have rooted their device just to customize it to their liking.

But movie companies are not exactly known for risking their movies get pirated, so we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out. For now though, if you’ve rooted your droid you can’t use Movie Rental – you can try Netflix though.
